hMPV (Human metapneumovirus) is a common respiratory virus that can cause symptoms similar to the common cold, such as cough, runny nose, and fever. It is most common in young children but can infect adults and older adults. In most cases, hMPV infection is mild and goes away within a few days. However, it can sometimes lead to more serious respiratory illnesses, such as pneumonia or bronchitis, especially in infants, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. There is no specific treatment for hMPV infection, but there are some things you can do to help relieve your symptoms and feel better. These include getting plenty of rest, drinking fluids, and taking over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

Transmission: It spreads easily from person to person through:

  • Coughing or sneezing
  • Touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes

Symptoms:

  • Runny nose
  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Wheezing (in some cases)

Risk Factors for Severe Illness:

  • Infants
  • Older adults
  • People with weakened immune systems
  • People with chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, COPD)

Treatment:

  • No specific treatment for the virus itself
  • Focus on relieving symptoms:
    • Rest
    • Fluids
    • Over-the-counter pain relievers (like acetaminophen or ibuprofen)

Prevention:

Staying home when sick

Frequent handwashing

Covering coughs and sneezes

Avoiding close contact with sick people

Important Note: If you or someone you care for has severe symptoms (difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, bluish skin color), seek immediate medical attention.
